Sensory Acuity – The Key to Mind Reading

I am spending the holiday season in Kolkata. The other night I was watching TV with a couple of my cousins when I amazed them with what looked like a feat of telepathy.

Simple Steps to Reading People like you were Telepathic

This article will deconstruct what I did and how you can develop the skill of reading people to the point where they will think you are psychic.

Scene Setting

We were watching a quiz programme in Hindi which is a language I know almost nothing about. The show consisted of a quiz master asking either / or questions to multiple contestants who over time get eliminated for getting too many answers wrong. It is fast paced; great for audience participation and soon my cousins were shouting their answers at the TV as the programme progressed.

They were laughing and joking about me choosing answers because they knew I don’t speak Hindi. Regardless they were totally amazed when after five minutes they realised I was almost 100% right despite not knowing the language. Here is how I did it.

Calibration, the Key to NLP Sensory Acuity

The question master was reading the questions from a card and he knows the answer before he has asked the question. I watched a few questions and calibrated his body language and tone of voice. I was looking for subtle changes between how he read out the two answers. All I then had to do was connect those subtle changes to the correct answer.

It took me a few questions to get it right but after that I was near 100% accurate. The few I missed were possibly down to distractions, those questions he did not read ahead so didn’t know the answer when he read the choices out and some basic dumb luck. What was good was the fact that I was getting a far higher strike rate than my cousins and I didn’t understand the language.

Neat Party Trick But is it Useful?

The truth is that if this is all you could do with this skill then it would be a little useless. But what if you could read those tiny micro muscle movements, hear the small changes in tone of voice and be able to calibrate them to changes in emotions, thoughts and intentions? How useful would that be? You could use the skills to:

  • *Check if someone is lying
  • *They are genuine about the feeling towards you product, service or solution
  • *You are having the emotional impact you want with your audience
  • *Predict how they are feeling and thinking

How Do I get this level of Sensory Acuity?

The process along with how you can develop the skill quickly is fully explored on the Advanced Persuasion Patterns Programme but here is a cut down version for you to play with.

The first part of the process is getting into Peripheral Vision or 360 Degree Expanded Awareness. One of the things many NLPers and Body Language Experts miss is that it is a collection of different factors that are indicators of change. Noticing someone lean in towards you as an action may not mean much. But when you combine it with the fact that their mouth relaxes, their pupils dilate, they uncross their legs and their tone of voice deepens there is a good chance that they are interested in you.

To be able to spot everything that is going on in one go you need to develop 360 expanded awareness. This also has the advantage of making you more relaxed and receptive a well. It is very difficult to have self talk when in this state and that means you will have less judgement and more awareness.

There are several different ways of approaching the second part of the process. My favourite is to imagine I am seeing the world through the eyes of my subject. So in the situation above I was imagining looking out through the eyes of the quiz master. From there I was just feeling what he felt and it was obvious the difference between the right and wrong answers.

Another obvious way of doing it would be just to imagine nothing and notice whatever you notice about the other person. The important thing is to calibrate. Before I started predicting answers I spent a few minutes noticing and calibrating the feelings to right and wrong answers first. One the Advanced Persuasion Patterns Programme we look at innocuous questions you can ask so that they give you right / wrong, truth / lie, like / dislike response that you can calibrate with covertly.
