Hypnotic NLP Coaching Formula

I have been asked a few times by coaches for a general formula for NLP and Hypnotic Coaching. Here is a powerful coaching process that can create some serious changes very quickly.

But first a general health warning, the basis written here is very powerful and can lead to some deep revelations. Unless you have been on a good NLP Practitioner Training Course just use this as general guidelines rather than getting into the powerful state changing material.

NLP Process for Hypnotic Coaching

As a process I find this very flexible. My Self Hypnosis workshops lead people through this very process and trains them to be able to perform it for themselves amongst other things. My general coaching in whatever field I happened to be coaching in follows these general principles and I train my graduates to be able to deliver this both overtly and covertly on NLP Practitioner Training Courses.

I am writing this as a pure coaching process with a client. Obviously there are differences when working with yourself, a group or having to do this covertly, say in a management setting. Any good NLP Practitioner will be able to work out how this changes for a given context, but feel free to contact my office if you want details of how this would change. Be warned I will want evidence of your NLP Credentials to ensure you have the tools to be able to use this effectively.

NLP Coaching Process

The first step once the rapport building, contract setting and boundary discussions have taken place is to discover what the client wants. Through these discussions I will be covertly pre-framing the experience, the expected results and loosening up some of the existing beliefs the client holds.

Covert Hypnotic Trance Inductions

Also through this process I will be taking them gently through a covert trance induction. When talking about goal setting this is easy to do and most NLP Practitioners would be familiar with the process. The key here is to get them to “act as if” it has already happened, vividly visualising the results. By bouncing between current and future results you are fractionating the client and sending them further towards a trance state. Feel free to think about anchoring this state.

NLP Outcome Setting

Use whatever goal setting mechanism you are comfortable with so long as it is comprehensive enough to examine both the current situation and the desired results. The key question here is what has stopped them from achieving this result in the past. If they have never thought of it before then you need to look at what is creating this as the right time to be going for this new result. If they have tried and failed before then you need to get them to explore what created that failure for them.

Perceptual Positions, NLP Exercise

Once you have a well formed outcome and the current state fully explored the next step would be a perceptual positions exercise. Personally I would do this exercise full blown, with special anchors and the client walking between three positions. First position would be the current state, second position would be the end result and third a neutral observer position watching the difference between the two.

In first and second position you are looking for specific information. The thing that the client will be able to find easily is the behaviour and the results that each of the two positions entails. What you are looking for is the beliefs, values and identity of the current state and the person that has created the outcome. My favourite type of question when my client is in second position is “Who do you have to be to create this result?” Obviously you might need to frame this question and drill down a little to get the answers that you are looking for.

Consider for a moment what your client will have achieved by this stage of the process. Firstly they will be in some heavy duty trance states, remember you will have had them visualising, stepping in to imaginary future selves and bouncing between various different states. Secondly they will have a contrast between who they currently are and the future person they will have to be to create the results they are looking for.

NLP Techniques, Time Lines

From here you can use any of your favourite NLP and Hypnosis techniques to get rid of the limiting beliefs and install the beliefs needed to achieve the outcomes. My personal preference is to use time line processes because with a slight reframe you can look at the whole perceptual positions exercise as a time line. The observer position is good in this respect as well because, again with a slight reframe, you can get your client to see the changes in the time line out towards the future.

If you are thinking of a time line approach remember you are not restricted to staying within the boundaries of current and future selves. Going back further in the past to find evidence of the new beliefs is useful. Going further out in to the future beyond the outcome to see the long term results could be good for a whole lot of things including building motivation and desire.

NLP Techniques, Belief Changes

Also, you are not restricted to using a time line process here any belief change process would work. The issue is not the change process but how you elicit the beliefs and values that were limiting and the ones that will support the result.

Finally there is the usual coaching clean up and ecology checks to do.

I generally allow for five hours and am generally done in just over three when working one to one with a client with this sort of process. I can break it into separate sessions and this can take considerably longer because of the break between sessions.

Doing this covertly obviously takes time and you have less control over the variables, but the general principles remain the same.
